Benefit Lemon Aid Color Correcting Eye Primer

I did a lot of research on eye primers vs price. We had a lot to choose from- Benefit, NARS, Urban Decay, etc. We even went by MAC. The best primer vs price I could find was this one. Not only was this one twice as big (more product) but it was the cheapest. Great about this one, is that it actually has a great color all on its own! :P After a day of wear (12 hours) on one eye, measured against one eye not primed, the difference was pretty pronounced. There was no creasing or smudging on the primed eye, and I have a lot of problems with creasing makeup. Very impressed.

Really brilliant colors, applied wet or dry. The display at Sephora contained a lot of tutorials and combination options. I fell in love because I am actually a huge Britney fan, and I wanted to know what the fuss was about when it came to her recent brand affiliation with MUFE. Great products- the colors went on my skin as vibrantly as they looked in the pot, and stayed PUT ALL DAY.

You may have seen many products from Micabella on my blog so far. I have 10 colors with Micabella. But I got suckered into checking out a Bellapierre kiosk while on holiday, we were curious about the competition, or if they were affiliated. Bellapierre has a much larger selection, while some of the colors are very similar, their prices are also competitive (the same). The colors, however, are much more vibrant, and you can tell just by testing application that they make a far superior product. My only word of warning: Their customer service is kinda iffy and their site has very little

information about where to go to buy their products. It's sad that such a great product is backed by such a great army of idiots. Unfortunately I didn't actually get "Freeze" which I wanted. The sales girl screwed up and put in another blue she had said she admired. I was NOT happy, as I couldn't return to exchange it.

Tish & Snooky's Manic Panic Lust Dust in "Infra Red"

Millennium is closing. :( Their location in Metrotown could not support the rent they were being asked for and they were incidentally forced to close and move. They moved downtown, right next to Golden Age Comics on Granville. Amazing location, but the loss of revenue and the expense of moving meant that they could not afford to advertise for their new location except via facebook- most of their original patrons were not even aware they had reopened. If you love this shop, please go and buy. They could save their business with some revenue. Lots of steampunk fashions, unfortunately, not the kind of prices you expect at a clearance sale.

Manic panic makes a really good product. This smudges out a bit more than I want for a red, and it isn't quite as vibrant. It's a shimmer, and I wanted a red matte. But for $7, Manic Panic does make great products (I have one of their lipsticks as well) and it was worth a try.

I was in love with both the first edition MAC Viva Glam Lady Gaga and Nicki Minaj 'Pink Friday' lipsticks, but I missed both production runs- I've bought a few vibrant pinks looking for something similar, but they were all too dark and too fuschia (great colors anyway- just not quite what I was looking for). This is the closest one I've found. It can go on thick and vibrant or soft and sheer, depending on how generously you apply it. Great find!

LUSH Caca Auburn Henna Hair Dye

My best advice for the use of this brand of henna, is add things to enhance the color. We used lemon juice and paprika. Henna kind-of smells like compost. To make it smell awesome, add cinnamon- it makes the dye smell like ginger snap cookies. I kept my dye on overnight, wrapped in plastic and a towel. They recommend 3-8 hours at the least.

T for Toes Tea Tree Powder

$12.99; LUSH

This stuff is the homemade version of gold bond. Essentially it has tea tree oil, peppermint and antifungals to keep your feet smelling good, and dry. I use a cheap cosmetic brush to spread it evenly between my toes. I occasionally sprinkle it in my shoes. It has a really pleasant lemony smell, too.

Sadly, the first Hard Candy product that disappointed me. It goes on thick, which is nice because it spreads fairly well and the color is nice and brilliant. One one hand, it dries fairly quickly, but the downside is it cracks, it flakes, and if you touch it at all it rubs off really easily. All you need to do to get it off is wipe your eye with tissue. I suppose that one is up to you- I'd rather have to wash my face or use makeup remover to get something off rather than have it gradually flake off into my eyes.

I love how black the mascara itself is, but I hate the brush. I HATE the brush. The bristles are thick and hard, and spiralled, the brush is also curved, so you get thick application and it doesn't spread very nicely. I'm thinking about stealing an old brush, washing it and swapping it out with this one. So far, my favorite mascara to date is still Rimmel (all of their mascara types), with L'Oreal Voluminous Mascara running a close second. I am intrigued to try that new Cover Girl Falsies mascara, too.

About Micabella:

There are mixed reviews about Micabella online because of the price, the way the sales clerks are, and the amazing discounts they somehow manage to give you when you buy in bigger volumes. At face value, for one or two items, Micabella is a total ripoff. Buying makeup from them is sort-of a game. The best thing to do is to go in with a group of people and buy together, splitting the bill evenly. Usually the person paying the tax gets the extra item (there is usually one extra item-- a group of three people buys 10 eyeshadows for $80, they all get three each, but the person paying the tax gets four)... etc.

Their products though are actually really nice. But I am a penny pincher. I will generally not buy makeup over $5.00 or so. So every few months my sisters, mom, girlfriends and I go in to Micabella and buy together. The more you buy the bigger the discount they'll give you. Also, on occasion they will throw in extra items. It's not a bad way to get really nice makeup for a deal.

The way Micabella mineral makeup works is that it can be used for eyes, lips, blush... it can be used both wet and dry. It is the pigment, so you shake a little bit into the lid (and I mean a little bit- a little goes a long, long way) and apply on a bare eyelid for a nice shimmer, or on primer for a more bold shimmer. You can also mix it on a damp brush for a brilliant hardline, or sweep it onto lips with a dry brush and cover with clear lip gloss. I have mica lipgloss but any clear gloss works just as well. I really want to get the primer down the road. Right now I use my Rimmel concealer. The Mica eyeshadow stays on really well, it doesn't crease much and even after sleeping in it, it still looks pretty fabulous.

I really have to stop shopping! Fortunately, when I do, it is on a budget, and usually for a good reason. There was a major cold snap here and the snowing started, so I had to buy a few more essentials for my winter collection.

Now, I've never been a hater of Ugg boots. And I'll admit, a lot of the time I never fall for trends immediately, and sometimes not until years after they're popular. Once I tried my first pair of Uggs, I was forever hooked. Unfortunately my last pair did not survive Winter 2009, so I had to buy a new pair.

As I mentioned in a previous post, I am absolutely loving the sweaterdress. I first fell for them in the winter of 2007 when I spotted someone wearing a white v-neck sweaterdress with nude leggings and ugg-styled boots. Sorry- but I am one of the few that actually likes boots- and I've sported a pair of uggs before- black- and I loved them very much! They weren't immediately fashion forward, but they were very comfortable, and the acceptance that, for once, comfort had a solid foothold in the fashion world, made them ever so much more alluring to me. For the record, I wish I was brave enough to wear this Gaga-inspired number, but it is a little too cutting-edge for me.

I used to have a buckle-wrap sweater like this, though it was not dress-length, it was one of my favorite pieces. I eventually parted with it because I felt it was too bulky at the top and was unflattering because of its shape. But this dress is made of a much thinner fabric blend that is sleek, and the length pulls any bulk out of the garment, cinching at the waist and giving a flattering shape.

Hey everyone! As you may know, I am a big fan of window shopping. It keeps your eyes current, you get a good idea of what the trends are (but not the ones that are like wildfire and will get old, boring and cliche too soon) and where the good deals are. Today at the mall, they were putting out all the new clothes for the winter season and putting last season's clothes into clearance. I love clearance shopping- even if you are a season behind, a lot of the time last season yielded some unpopular styles that will likely be in fashion next year- finding classic pieces that are always popular are a surefire way to get great deals for next year. Also, I like to decide for myself what I like and what I don't- some trends last for years in slow growing popularity.

Anyhow- I was in Winners, and found some fabulous loot!

Steve Madden Wool Military Jacket

I've been loving the military jacket trend for quite some time now. I think it may have been the use of military button style coats (a la Sgt Pepper) used by Coldplay and Britney Spears in recent years; though I like them less embellished than that. And I have had a growing love of pea coats since last winter, but ones that fell about mid-thigh, just above the knee and were fitted at the waist. My first had a cinching belt there, but I disliked the bisecting aspect of the belt and often didn't use it. Military pea coats look more tailored and sleek.

Statement eyes. Eyes are always my favorite thing to highlight, and I prefer the look of a nude lip most of the time- it has the allure of the morning after. However, one of the great things about a light lid and eyeliner is that it looks really great with a nude lip, or with a statement color. I'm still sort-of trapped in my matte pink phase (I'm using a great purple-pink shade from Shiseido- a huge splurge on my part, though NYC sells a similar shade for a tenth of the price). Deep to dark reds are very popular this fall, though I would reserve them for evening use- they're a little much for daytime wear.

Now, not to seem biased, but sleek hair has been in for quite some time, and while I am a huge fan of that trend (it eliminates so much of the work and somehow always looks fabulous) my fondness is waning. This is the one time I actually like sleek hair. On longer hair, lately it feels too artificial, and really is more time consuming. At the moment, I have shoulder length curly hair, though I usually keep my hair about chin length- because it is so much work. However, I am really loving curly hair right now! Here are my top picks for fall:

A la Phantom of the Opera, I have always loved Emmy Rossum's sculpted curls, especially when they were not pulled into a 'do of any kind. Sculpted, but left free and wild to roam where they may. The sculpted curls look sophisticated, while leaving them to free movement lets them look more natural and sexy.

Drew Barrymore's short do, with ringlets is exactly the kind of hair I love. Though the hair itself is sort-of big, it reminds me of the kind of style you'd see on Mad Men- cute but sexy- and I love it.

For wavy hair, I really like the tousled rocker look. I've never been a fan of bangs, but I'm really starting to fall in love with them, used right. I think it started with my Bettie Paige obsession- but the more textured and choppy the look, with more layers, the better. When you wake up in the morning, throw in a little styling mousse, and nobody will be the wiser.

The french braid! This look is almost always reserved for summer, especially with hair that is left down. But I love it in updos for fall, especially when they are used in new and interesting ways, that still look natural.

Sorry for the late update, guys! I got married in June and started working again shortly thereafter, so I've had a lot less time. Anyhow, now I have some money (some), so here are my latest purchases, that I absolutely love. My favorites come from the new line from Hard Candy, now exclusively available at Wal-Mart. This is an amazing thing, because Hard Candy has only ever been available from Sephora since it's launch in 1995, and was quite a bit more expensive before they moved out of Sephora and revamped their cosmetic line. Their cosmetics are nicely packaged, and high quality- up there with Too Faced cosmetics at a fraction of the cost.

It cinches in at the waist without a belt, and though wide belts look fabulous with this coat, it was more comfortable without it. The buttons stop just at the hips, so the bottom of the coat hangs open and flares nicely at the leg. The neck is open just enough to allow for a peek at a nice scarf paired with the jacket. Though thin, this jacket is actually quite warm.

Other things I'm currently loving:

1. As much as I hate to admit it, the new Miley Cyrus clothing line at Wal-Mart. I shop there a lot, because they have competitive products at competitive prices that I can afford- and affordable fashion is deep and dear to me. Miley's line is sized more for ladies on the petite size, but I can fit most of the clothes she has made. I really love her rocker tees and tanks, especially with the rips up the back. She has a sensational military jacket, available in black and olive, that I was panting over.

2. The Ed Hardy fragrance collection. It all smells fantastic. All of it.

3. La Senza's double push-up line. The bras are scary expensive. They are around $50 each- but for women with modestly sized breasts, it's thousands of dollars for an upgrade surgery, or a new confidence-boosting, non-invasive bra that takes you up two full cup-sizes. My husband loves them- I have two!

4. Sweater dresses. Yes, I am late to this fashion event. They've been popular for several years, and have gradually become shorter and shorter- now they're just long sweaters that you absolutely must wear pants under. But I am completely in love with sweater dresses, ones you can wear free of pants or leggings, that fall just below the knee at pencil skirt length, or just above the knee. I like ones with long and short sleeves, as long as the neck is interesting, not too high-cut or bulky. That tends to look boxy and less feminine.

5. While I am still loving the bright, vibrant nail enamel trend (thanks, Rihanna!), I am deeply loving soft pastel colors that are usually reserved for spring. While trends seem to be leading back towards the classic french tip, classically manicured or nude nails, and fall leaf-inspired reds, berries, oranges and golds, I am deeply loving the idea of a cooler, softer color pallette that will play really nicely as it stands out and contrasts against the colors of fall, and into snowy days.

Anyone who knows anything about my style preferences knows that I am partial to Rimmel products. I haven't really experimented with extremely high-end cosmetics, because I can't afford to, however, I tend to buy on the higher end of the affordable cosmetics. I couldn't believe what I was doing when I actually invested more than $10 on a good waterproof eyeliner pencil. For the record, if you're looking for a really great black eyeliner that goes on black, is waterproof and will not smudge, bleed or fade, try Marcelle's Midnight Black Waterproof Eyeliner. It's hypo-allergenic, also, so if you are sensitive to some makeup, this should work for you.

I'm a big fan of a dramatic look, and I tend to concentrate on my eyes. I have really full lips, so my mouth is dramatic enough on its own. I've learned through trial and error to never mix a dramatic eye with dramatic lips, so I stick to sheer or clear lip glosses. I usually prefer Rimmel Kiss Off! and Rimmel Vynil Stars products. A trend I've recently noticed, and become a fast fan of, is dramatic eyes using liquid eyeliner. This isn't a new technique, but it has recently been made famous by Dior.

This is my favorite look. It eliminates the need for eyeshadow at all, though to play it up a little, I will usually sweep a bright colored eyeshadow across my lower eyelid with a precision angled eyeshadow brush. (By the way, never go cheap on brushes. The cheap ones are made of thick, synthetic hairs that will irritate your skin and make your makeup look like crap. I like Quo brushes). The liquid eyeliner takes some time to master the precision of applying it. I use a generic, super-cheap liquid eyeliner from the dollar store. It's super-black, goes on smoothly, without clumping, stays on well during the day, and virtually peels off when I want it gone. It's easy to remove with makeup remover and makeup removing wipes and comes in a generously sized bottle in comparison to higher end liners, and usually costs me less than $2. I've used more expensive liners, and I don't find them as flexible. When they dry, they feel cakey on the eye and make for a less comfortable wear. Play around with your brands until you find one that's comfortable and has some staying power. If you can find one that is all of those things but dries quickly, go for it. Application mistakes occur most of the time from blinking before it has dried.

A makeup trend that I've loved for several months, but hasn't been widely used, is peacock eyeshadow. It's super-briht, neon or day-glo colors that are applied in single colors. Some people like to mix and match several colors on their eyelids (I like yellow, orange, pink and purple, applied in sequence across the eye and then blended together in a gradient). Too many colors used too dramatically can be visually overwhelming and look gaudy.

To make these colors really pop, it never hurts to pair it with a matching eyeliner. I prefer Annabelle Kohl and Waterproof Eyeliner Pencils. They come in a bunch of super-bright colors, that go on bright. For an extremely dramatic look, wetting the tip of the pencil before applying it really helps.

Finishing these two looks off with a few tweaks will complete the effect. I recommend an eyebrow pencil or gel, and waterproof mascara. I am currently using Rimmel Sexy Curves Super Black Waterproof Mascara. For the lips, keep it to a clear balm (I like Bonne Bell Lip Smackers Chapstick) or gloss. My most recent lipgloss purchase was Bonne Bell Berry Whip Lip Glam Lip Gloss. I also love Hard Candy lip glosses.

I, myself, have varying tastes. Nobody can seem to tell me what my style is. I love the 1940's Pin-Up, Tattoo-Rock style (the girls of LA Ink are a huge inspiration to me, stylistically). I really appreciate Britney Spears' style (even though she makes the odd fashion faux-pas). I'm into glamour-punk, industrial goth, the sexetary look (aka the hot librarian), vampires, etc. Hopefully you'll appreciate the things I like.
